Journey to magazine

Journey to music magazine

I used standard A4 paper (international paper) for my front page, then ruled out 5 cm using the ruler tool.

After placing in the barcode, I kept hold of the ‘shift’ button so that the image did not go out of proportion. I practiced this rule for all the images that I used.

I have used a solid font for my masthead, cover lines and teasers since they will better grab the attention of readers.

When I wrote the teasers, I wrote each word on a different layer as to avoid gaps so that the front page will look professional.

New Masthead

I decided to change my masthead because I thought this one is more suited as it is more formal. Rather than just a standard bold print, this one looks younger/ ‘fresher’.

photoshoot

Photo shoot
Here are some of the images that I took before deciding on the final ones that I would use on my magazine cover, contents page and double page spread. I was looking for a young model and asked for some ‘vein’ poses. I aimed for a look that most rap artists are currently going for, so he has a young, urban look.
I decided to use the last picture for my front page because it looked the most eye catching as the model is looking directly at the camera and he is central.

Mastheaad

Masthead for magazine
I am using this masthead because it is solid and bold, however it is not too serious.
My original title for the double page spread.
I decided not to use this one because the topic for the article is now different.

College Magazine Evaluation

Sinead Miller
College magazine Evaluation

My task was to create a front page and contents page of a college magazine. The price, content and ethos was to be realistic, so that the target audience would appreciate purchasing and reading it.
I decided to use red as it is the colour that the college is currently using and I wanted to keep the ethos of the organisation. I took pictures of students who actually go to the college so that it is more realistic, and appealing.
I named the college magazine VI Form. I think this was appropriate because it is short and snappy. It does not take too much effort to read, and even though it is spelt differently, the name is familiar to all the students, and it is less formal so they would want to read it. The masthead was a solid recognisable red, so that it will be appealing to the target audience of 16-19 year olds.
For the main cover line and teasers, I used some current events to draw the reader in. The teasers focus on the show that will be put on by the performing arts students. Since I spoke to some students about whether or not they are interested in the theatre, this is something I know readers will be interested in and want to read into. I did not put too much on the cover so it is not cluttered, therefore daunting to read.
For the model, I used a current student. She is situated in the centre of the magazine. She was dressed in typical style of clothes that a college student will wear, so people will be able to relate to it. The magazine will be free for all students. I did not think that students would be willing to pay for a magazine, or it would scare them off wanting to read them.
I wanted the contents page to have a more professional look, I could have added less details and instead had a more simple approach sticking to the colour scheme. I discovered that lighter colours are more attractive, so I decided to change my contents page. I thought this one would look more current. For the contents page, I used what I thought would be beneficial to the students of Leyton Sixth Form e.g.  Fashion tips, healthy living and tips on studying. There is yet another image of a current college student on the contents page. She is wearing the college lanyard and a smile, showing a positive attitude to ‘the student life’.

After looking at some magazines, I noticed that the designs of the mastheads were reflections of the type of magazine that was being sold. There were stronger, bolder prints for the urban and fitness magazines whereas the higher classed ones had a more formal approach, with softer fonts. I noticed that these ones were also more expensive, and all the magazines that had the same audience and objective were similar colours. The more popular magazines were at eye level, so I did not have to search too hard and well known names were not difficult to detect. The main stories on the magazines were easy to read from a distance, and it only took a few seconds for me to want to buy all the fashion magazines. All the pictures were in season, and the magazines I usually read had similar items to those in my wardrobe. The magazines were all up to date with the season.

Distribution methods

There are multiple different ways to distribute a magazine. Here are a few:

Sell magazine issues to retail stores in Bulk

There are thousands of small and medium sizes retail stores that will carry magazines. The method of being able to distribute a magazine in these venues differs at each location. Publishers of print media can sell issues in bulk directly to store owners or market their products using retail buyers. Cheap wholesale pricing can be promoted to distribute a magazine in high volume quickly. Magazine publishers may also benefit from opening an ongoing account with certain retail stores.

Offer Subscriptions to Readers

Securing repeat customers are one of the best ways to distribute a magazine. Publishers can charge one flat rate for semi-annual and annual subscriptions. These orders help to build a wide reader base for magazines. Subscriptions also provide an ongoing revenue stream, which benefits small magazine publications.

Hire Messengers to Sell Magazines

Individual messengers can be a useful way to distribute magazines for extra profit. This form of direct sales works similar to the newspaper business. A publisher can hire men and women to stand in areas of high foot or vehicle traffic and sell individual magazine issues. These salesmen would work as messengers who either keep a portion of each transaction or get paid an hourly wage. Publishers can reduce the amount of rick involved by offering commissions instead of wages.

Develop Corporate Partnerships

Niche magazine publications can be sold as large volume subscriptions to service based corporations. These transactions would develop as a partnership where publishers provide new issues on a frequent basis. Some of the best opportunities for these partnerships include airlines, medical facilities and large manufacturing companies. Corporate partnerships can be used in combination with other distribution sources to generate more revenue for publishers. There are still ways to distribute a magazine and receive hefty profits when partnering with large companies.

Provide Free Magazine Issues with Related Merchandise

Publishers can enter into an agreement where their magazines will be distributed with consumer products or services. This deal can reduce the marketing tasks for a publisher who needs to make high volume sales. Packaging may be the only concern for magazine publishers after a deal with commercial products have been made. When a consumer purchases specific products, they receive one magazine issue free of charge. This deal benefits everyone involved in one transaction.

Vibe magazine

The main cover line is larger than the other cover lines, however it is not as big as the masthead. It is positioned around the cover subject as it is referring to it. It is short and snappy, very eye catching and easy to read.

There are only two main colours on this magazine, red and black, portraying a sexy image it will be more appealing to the target audience. I think this article is aimed at men because it has a black background an a sharp masculine font. The cover lines are talking about how to ‘rock a suit’ and gambling. The main image of Trey Songz is someone that young men in their late teens up to early thirties who enjoy listening to hip hop and R&B look up to.

This is a music and entertainment magazine and is one of the leading publications for its genre wich is covers Hip Hop and R&B. It was founded in 1993 by Quincy Jones, who origionally named it Volume. It has all the relevant news and events that are happening. It is $5:28 at the moment, this shows that it is aimed at people of a higher class. It doesn’t just focus on the music side of Hip Hop but also looks at topics associated with it like the current fashion trends that the fragrance. They also have interviews so that fans can follow what their idols are doing at the moment. There is a new issue every season, so that the consumer is always kept up to date.

The masthead, it is written in a solid bold red, it is always written in a big solid font so that it will become well known and noticeable. Red is usually used as an accent colour to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect colour for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites. In advertising, red is often used to evoke erotic feelings (red lips, red nails, red-light districts, 'Lady in Red'.

Trey songz is the cover subject of this magazine colour. He is displayed on the front cover to attract the female audience. He is also in front of the masthead to express his importance. Trey songz is a well known R&B artist and at the higher end of his profession, he is someone that people look up to as a role model. He is looking directly at the audience, which will grab their attention and make them want to read more.

http://hiphop.popcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/mariahvibe.jpgAfter a  first glance at this image, the gender which this magazine is aimed at is not detectable. One of the main colours, yellow, is a mutual colour. There is a picture of Mariah Carey, in a two piece swim suit,  which will indicate it is aimed at men, however because they have used a light pink in one of the cover lines, I have come to the conclusion that it is aimed at women. The teasers displays some gossip including the life of other popular artists to attract the reader. There is a direct gaze, which also connets the audience to the magazine.

It is clear that this edition was published in the summer because it is showing a model in a swimsuit on a beach and the teasers are talking about ‘summer jams’ and the main cover line is talking about ‘hitting the beach in hills’. Mariah’s face is covering a huge chunk of the masthead showing her authirity. The colour yellow represents warm, cheerful, jovial, sunny, bright, radiant, mellow, original, imaginative, idealistic, spiritual, creative, artistic, hope, optimism, sun and summer. The whole magazine has a very optimistic, positive feel that will lure in readers.

I have noticed that this image has also set an urban theme with the language that is being used. Though this is a proffessional magazine, not everything has been written in standard english, which also suggests that there is a younger audience.

http://monet22.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/contents-page-112.jpg

There is always a ‘V’ on the contents page of the vibes magazine wich is there to represent the brand. It is mportant that the contents page is well planned because it determins weather or not the consumer will want to buy and read the magazine.  There is a simple layout with as little writing as possible, that makes the readers job less daunting.

There is a very plain bckground with few colours wich makes the model, who is taking up most of the contents page stand out. The main focus of this pahe is on the models legs as they are in the V shape that represents VIBE.

They have used a very famous model and singer wich is relevant considering this magazine focuses primarily on music, fashion and entertainment.

I think this issue is aimed at women. I noticed that the color black is used alongside other dark colors. Black is associated with power, elegance and formality. It corresponds with the theme of the general magazine as it displays a very powerful, elegant image.

The short explanation of the different articles in the magazine attract the target audience and make them want to read more. It shows yet another popular face, Usher. At first glance, I thought this one was aimed at women because there is a picture of a sexy male model and R&B singer. However, looking into it, I noticed that the colours behind him are black and white, which will be more appealing to men. I therefore concluded that this was aimed at men’s fashion, as a lot of thought has gone into his outfit, and if it were aimed at a female audience, he would not have been wearing so many clothes. Unlike the previous contents pages, the large ‘V’ for vibe has not been displayed, furthermore, the column that has the contents of the magazine is smaller than the model. The Main attraction here is the popular R&B artist usher, which dominates his presence. The font that is used on this contents page is informal, which portrays the fun, fresh urban image of the magazine.
